AI Will Replace All Programmers by 2025

Starting in early 2023, a wave of predictions emerged claiming that AI coding tools would make human programmers unnecessary within two years. Headlines like "The End of Programming" and "Why Learning to Code Is No Longer Worth It" proliferated across social media and tech publications.

As of 2026, software development hiring remains strong and programming skills are more valuable than ever. AI coding tools have made developers more productive, not redundant. The tools are excellent at generating boilerplate, suggesting implementations, and automating repetitive tasks, but they require skilled human oversight for architecture decisions, debugging complex issues, understanding business requirements, and ensuring code quality.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' software developer employment projections remain positive. Companies that adopted AI coding tools report that they need the same number of developers (or more) but those developers produce significantly more output.

The claim confused "AI can write code" with "AI can do everything a software developer does." Writing code is only a fraction of software development. Developers also design systems, communicate with stakeholders, make trade-off decisions, debug production issues, and maintain complex systems over time. AI tools are productivity multipliers, not replacements.

The pattern is consistent with every previous productivity tool: spreadsheets did not eliminate accountants, CAD did not eliminate architects, and AI coding assistants have not eliminated programmers.
